Ranking on the front page of Google is very hard to achieve. If you think about it there are tens of thousands of sites out there looking to do the same thing, but there are many other ways to leap potential customers to your site.
Google Adwords is one way of getting people to your site instantly because it is paid for advertising with a difference....
Normally if you were to place an ad in a paper, you would pay a fixed amount without any guarantees of the number of people who would see that ad and who will want your product/service enough to call in. Adwords is very different to this style of advertising, it is what's know as Pay Per Click or PPC for short. When you search in Google the top 3 results and all of the results down the right side of the screen are paid for listings. People bid to get their ads placed there, sometime huge amounts. However, you don't get charged for being seen, you only get charged if someone clicks on your advertisement and comes through to your website. So lets say that your ad was seen 100 times but no one clicked on it, you wouldn't pay a penny.
Where this form of advertising beats the more traditional ones is that you only pay if someone visits your site and, if your campaigns are set up correctly, your ad is only shown when keywords you have chosen are typed into Google. For example, if you only sold "blue matchbox cars", you could configure your ads not to show when someone types in "matchbox" or even "red matchbox cars", it can be as specific and precise as you need it to be.
